Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was an exceptional abolitionist, author and orator whose use of words, both spoken and written, were unrivaled by anyone of his time. When Douglass delivered a speech or penned one of his many literary works, people paid attention. He is widely considered one of the greatest authors and orators in history.
As a child, Douglass taught himself to read despite it being illegal for slaves to learn to read and write. Douglass’s self-education is ultimately what led to him freeing himself from bondage, which is why he said that people who educate themselves can never fall victim to slavery.
